More about me
How do you Partner with people to 'clear the path ahead'?
My style in working with any individual is strength based. It is important to look at a person's strengths rather than focus on weakness. When people look at their own strengths, they are able to identify their own solutions to problems rather than to look to others to solve them. This also gives the individual a sense of autonomy and, overall, they feel in control and better about themselves.
What's your favorite thing about being an IRIS consultant?
IRIS is a self-directed program which has a strength based focus. People participating in the IRIS Program are able to choose who they want to help them based on their comfort level. When you see individuals being cared for by people who care about them, and who they care about, their overall health and safety is better. If a person is cared for by someone they can trust and are comfortable with, it is my opinion they can get better or feel safe enough to take risks they might not otherwise take. For example, if a person with a developmental disability feels trusted and comfortable in their living environment, they may feel comfortable and supported enough to attempt a work program.
What past experience prepared you to become an IRIS Consultant?
Working as a Functional Screener has allowed me to see what a person's strengths are in what they are able to do on their own. I also think that my overall experience with working with a diverse population of people has helped me to work with younger individuals, older adults, and people who have disabilities. My experience has taught me to help people help themselves to solve issues/problems they are experiencing.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I love to hit the bike trails whenever I have a chance. There are many different bike trails in the surrounding counties to choose from and I never get bored. I am a fan of a good movie on a cold winter night. I love to cook and find new recipes to try. I also game for fishing, boating, spending time when family and friends. When I have the opportunity, I like to take trips in the United States and out.
